Dear Colleagues:
It's August (yikes!) and that means I'm reaching for my "to do" list in the
hopes of getting a number of things accomplished before the sound and fury of
returning students hits the campus in a mere 2 weeks. Having waited for my
stimulus package...and then waited some more, I'm now convinced the only real
stimulus comes from a box of Godiva, Sees or similar distributor.
For those of you who attended our July meeting, Kent Seton and Bob McKim,
sponsors of that meeting, gave a brief description of their new firm, Edward
Charles Institute for Nonprofit Mergers and Acquisitions. They will be
providing more details of this work as part of their presentation during our
Professional Development seminar next month. Please go to their website to
learn more about this very timely topic.

Our September 8th meeting will also feature Janice Gow Petty, an
internationally recognized leader in the field of Ethics. Joining us will
be many of our nominees for National Philanthropy Day so I hope you will plan to
attend as we recognize them for their service to the Greater Los Angeles
community and hear Ms. Petty's ideas for navigating the minefield represented by
Ethics. Please check the website (
www.afpglac.org ) for full details and registration information.
The deadline for GLAC Board Nomination has been extended...just to ensure any
of you who are interested have a chance to submit your form. Complete
details are available on the website.
The Orange County Chapter will be offering the CFRE Review Course on
September 10 and 11 at the Southern California College of Optometry in
Fullerton. The AFP member price is $390 for the 2-day session.
Please check the OC Chapter website for more details ( click here )
or you can find a link at

On behalf of AFP's Government Affairs Committee and our liaison, Jane Hansen,
please note the following Call to Action:
Help AFP Fight Proposals That Would Limit Charitable Deductions (June
30, 2009) The White House continues to press for harmful limits on charitable
deductions to fund healthcare reforms. AFP urges you to contact members of
Congress immediately to oppose these measures.

I hope sand and surf are part of your August itinerary. The GLAC Board
will be on "retreat" as we gather our strategic thoughts about the next few
years and try to envision where this journey will take us. Neither Ben
Bernanke nor Tim Geithner was available so we're going it alone. Thank you
all for your interest and participation.
