AFP – GLAC
40 Years of Advancing Philanthropy
in the Greater Los Angeles Community
eSlate - President's Message - August 2008
Dear Colleagues:
It's August! Already! And we're busy preparing for our September
9th meeting that will feature Tim Burcham, CFRE, AFP's Chairman of the Board
as our luncheon speaker as well as recognizing the 3 finalists in each
National Philanthropy Day category. This will truly be a wonderful day to
come together in celebration of our profession and volunteer leaders as we
also anticipate Colette Murray, CFRE, a former AFP International Chairman
will be joining us. Please
make your reservation now for this meeting; we will be
unable to accommodate any on-site registrations as we anticipate a very
large group and must make the necessary arrangements.
For those of you who may have actually been vacationing in July (and
obviously didn't invite me) and missed the July 6th front page Los Angeles
Times article on Commission-based fundraising, I would encourage you to
visit their online archives to read the full story. With a lot of help
from AFP, we responded almost immediately, but they failed to print our
letter. However, it is posted on the GLAC website (
www.afpglac.org ) for those of you who are interested and may
find it of use with your own organization.
I am pleased to advise that we have renewed our partnership with the
Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM). They are offering a discount on
their programs to AFP-GLAC members. Please note that you must register
directly with the Center for Nonprofit Management - not through the GLAC
office
The Membership Committee is compiling the results of our Member Survey
and many thanks to all who responded. We'll advise as soon as the
results are available on the website.
In honor of our 40th Anniversary, we have created the 40th Fund
to replace our Chapter Treasury Campaign and are committed to raising $4000
to build a Resource Library of audio tapes, professional development
materials and media offerings free of charge to GLAC members who might be
more constrained than usual by current economic issues. Please read
the accompanying article and become part of this chapter success story.
At this moment in time, GLAC has both increased its membership and
improved our financial position, clearly defying the odds and conventional
wisdom. This is a reflection of each of you and the challenges you
face every day without hesitation. It is a continuing privilege to
represent you and I hope you will take pride in our collective achievements.
We'll see you on September 9th as we "rock the house".

AFP-GLAC 40th Fund
In honor of GLAC's 40th Anniversary, a 40th Fund* has been
established to create and support an outstanding, much-needed opportunity for
professional development and resources - a GLAC library of audio conferences,
webinar capability and other media tools, allowing members more education with
less travel at no expense.
The seemingly endless challenges posed by the economy, gas prices and
discretionary income dictate we must ensure the chapter membership has
affordable and easy access to a variety of professional development options.
By developing a resource center to support member needs and allowing you to
"stay put," GLAC hopes to proactively serve our members in an effective and
meaningful way.
Big celebrations at the Chapter call for big goals for fund raising—with all
proceeds going toward the development of a chapter resource library. We are
asking each member of this amazing Chapter to donate at least $40 to the 40th
Fund. Donations in excess of $40 are gladly accepted. All donors to
the 40th Fund will be recognized on the GLAC website.
This is YOUR chapter - thank you for your support.

own age!

The institute will cover such
topics as developing nonprofit strategy, creating strong nonprofit brands,
pursuing capital markets for nonprofit funding, improving nonprofit management
and leadership and sharpening negotiation skills. Sessions will not only explore
larger strategic issues, but also provide participants with practical ideas and
innovations that they can put to use immediately in their own organizations.

The Supply and Demand of Philanthropy in the 21st Century
Strategies for Fundraising and Financial Professionals
October 7-8, 2008
The Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College and the Association of
Fundraising Professionals (AFP) are pleased to offer a conference at Boston
College on October 7 and 8, 2008, specially designed for wealth advisers, estate
planners, fundraising professionals, directors of planned giving, vice
presidents of development, and CEOs and board members of nonprofit
organizations.
This conference will explore the new dynamics of philanthropy: the idea that
donors desire, rather than resist, greater charitable involvement, and that
philanthropy is becoming a large part of people's financial morality. By
understanding the implications of these new dynamics, fundraisers and financial
professionals can implement new strategies that will make their counsel more
fulfilling for their clients and more rewarding for themselves.
