40 Years of Advancing Philanthropy
in the Greater Los Angeles Community

President's Message - June 2008
Dear Colleagues:
If it is June, it MUST be time to submit your nominations for National
Philanthropy Day. On Wednesday, November 12th, for the 23rd year, the
Greater Los Angeles Chapter will once again proudly host this very special
event that showcases all that has been accomplished in the name of giving
and recognizes those who have accomplished it. This is the opportunity
to turn the spotlight on those who give without publicity because they
embody the spirit of giving. Please go to the website
( www.afpglac.org ) and make your nominations now. The committee has
worked hard to streamline the process, making it possible to submit in more
than one category directly on-line. National Philanthropy Day has its
founding roots in Los Angeles so it is our responsibility to dedicate this
day to all the "Giving Hearts" in our community.
My thanks to everyone who voted for the new chapter By-laws. We received
enough votes for adoption and these will go into effect on January 1, 2009.
Congratulations are also extended to both Chris Hershey of Hershey/Cause
Communications and Mary Schmitz, Ph.D. of Orthopaedic Hospital on their
nominations for the L.A. Business Journal's Outstanding Women of the Year.
And to Elizabeth Nesbitt, Netzel Associates and Vice President of Membership
as GLAC's membership count is now well above 500. Very nicely done.
We hope to see you at the Local Roundtables on the 10th and then back at the
Cathedral on July 8th when Jon Weedman of the Wells Fargo Foundation will
discuss their current giving. Please note other important dates on the
GLAC calendar included here.
Remember to keep the chocolate close at hand, share with those who need it
and submit your nominations. My thanks to all for your continuing
interest and participation.

Letter From Chamberlain Scholar
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for the opportunity to represent our chapter at the
45th AFP International Conference on Fundraising in San Diego this year as the
Chamberlain Scholar. I always heard great things about the educational
resources available through this conference and although I am certified and have
been a fundraiser for nearly nine years, this was my first chance to participate
in an AFP International Conference thanks to this award.
I must admit that
upon arrival, I was overwhelmed by the vast amount of fundraisers all in the
same location at the same time. There were over 4,000 people in attendance from
all over the world and I had no idea so many of us actually existed! With that
said, a true highlight for me was the California Chapters Reception where
I had a chance to meet a few members from our chapter for the first time.
No matter what level a fundraiser has achieved in his or her career, from ACFRE to
fundraising 101, there was something for everyone at this conference. Sessions
were offered on annual giving, board development, capital campaigns, corporate
relations, donor relations and stewardship, foundation relations, management,
major gifts, public relations and marketing, professional development, planned
giving, public policy and ethics, special events, volunteer development, and
technology. The hardest part was just deciding which sessions to attend.
I applied for the Chamberlain Scholarship because I am committed to a long
career as a fundraiser. I love working in this field and I want to learn as much
as I can. As is the case with most of us, I am working with very limited
resources, so this was one experience I was not going to achieve without
assistance.
The 2009
International Conference will take place March 29 - April 1, 2009, in New Orleans.
If you are considering attending the
2009 International Conference and need assistance, I highly recommend
applying for the Chamberlain Scholarship. Beyond that, I can only suggest
making sure to take advantage of the pre-planning opportunities which will be
forwarded via e-mail once you register.
I am deeply appreciative. Thank you again.
Wendy Santana, CFRE
