Dear Colleagues:

Who knew that our 40th year would be off to such an action-packed start? From candidate debates to stock market worries, gas prices, food concerns and whether Iceland will become the next Malibu coast, there is definitely a lot to talk about. And for those of you at the AFP San Diego Conference, you know there were a lot of attendees, (over 4000) engaged in constant dialogue. Dr. Jane Goodall brought her perspective on natural wonders while Sir Bob Geldof reflected on his journey with sex, drugs and rock and roll - yet there is room for both in the philanthropic universe.

In the GLAC universe, we are focused on the adoption of new standardized By-laws and need your vote. An AFP task force has been working on these for some time and the present revision is a greatly reduced far more flexible one than those we presently use. Upon adoption, all chapter By-laws will be the same, leaving most of the critical decisions to each chapter as best suits their specific needs. Some of the notable changes in the new By-laws are:

• All Board terms are 1 year, with the exception of the President, President-elect, and Immediate Past President.
  
• There is a maximum life time Board service cap of 8 years. Chapters may adopt lesser life time service caps, but may not exceed 8 years.
  
• Sets the number of Chapter Board members at no less than 5 and no more than 35.
  
• Allows Chapter Board meetings to take place in person or by conference call.
  
• Establishes a calendar year for both Board positions and financial recording.

Both the GLAC Executive Committee and Board of Directors have voted to adopt these By-laws. Now it's your turn. This is important to GLAC and our future ability to ensure leadership opportunities for those wishing to assume them. The deadline for voting is June 1 so let's hear from you.

Congratulations are extended to Terry Monteleone and her team as GLAC is the recipient of the 2007 Chapter 10-Star Award. This award indicates GLAC "serves as a model for all chapters to emulate in accomplishing the goals set forth by AFP and our chapter leadership". The chapter 10-Star logo will be incorporated into our materials for this year.

As a result of this award, GLAC will be hosting a FREE Audio-Conference for GLAC members on May 8th, from 10-11:30 a.m. See the accompanying notice for details.

Please remember to vote on the By-laws everyone; this is your chance to participate and it only takes a couple of minutes. We're continuing our work on the website and hope you've been experiencing some improvements. And don't forget our meeting on May 12th; excellent speakers and a chance to network.
