National Philanthropy Day is dedicated to honoring those who make
our community a better place to live. This is a wonderful
opportunity to invite and honor your special volunteers, donors,
clients and colleagues.
The AFP International Conference on Fundraising will take place in
San Diego March 30-April 2, 2008. Special deadlines
approaching soon are listed below for early bird discounts to the
conference and for Chamberlain Scholarship and Baumgardner
Scholarship applications.
We are delighted to announce our new slate of officers for 2008
and will host our annual meeting to elect our officers and new
Board members on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at the Cathedral
Conference Center downtown. We thank our members who
responded to our call for nominations in June.
Thank you to our wonderful team of officers chairs and
volunteers in the Greater Los Angeles region.
You are invited to get more involved.
Please feel free to call me, our NPD Co-Chairs or

2008 Baumgardner Scholar Program
Through funding from the Margye S. Baumgardner Endowment Fund,
the AFP Foundation will fund the registration fee for two (2)
senior fundraising professionals with a minimum of ten (10)
years in the profession to attend the Master’s Track of the
2008 AFP International Conference (March 30 - April 2, 2008 in San Diego, CA).
The individual must adhere to the AFP Code of Ethical Principles
and Standards of Professional Practice and be a CFRE or ACFRE.
The scholarships will be awarded to individuals who would not
ordinarily attend the conference without the support offered
through the Baumgardner Scholar Program. Preference will be
given to members of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter.
Recipients of the scholarships will be required to share
knowledge gained from the Master’s Track with their AFP
chapter by making presentations at a chapter meeting or
by using the knowledge in some type of service to the chapter.
The scholarships will cover the full conference registration fee ($495) plus fees for four Master’s Track segments ($35 each), for a total of $635.00.
The applicaiton deadline is Friday, November 30, 2007.
Completed application forms should be forwarded to
Peg Bergeron, Director of AFP Chapter Administration
by fax to
703-684-0540 or email to:
mbergeron@afpnet.org.
Please direct telephone inquiries to Peg Bergeron at 800.666.3863 Ext. 452.
2008 Chamberlain Scholarship
The Chamberlain Scholarship Program honors Ralph Chamberlain, CFRE,
a long-time fundraiser and supporter of AFP. Mr. Chamberlain
helped to form one of the organization’s first chapters, the
Greater New York Chapter and served as both chair of the
association and the foundation. Because of his long-time support
of the Foundation for Philanthropy, the AFP Board of Directors
renamed the Conference Scholar Program in 2000 to honor
the memory of Mr. Chamberlain and his commitment to the fundraising profession.
AFP Chapters may name one $500 grant recipient per year.
The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy will pay $500 of the $510
registration fee for Chamberlain Scholars.
All Chamberlain Scholars qualify for the discount conference
registration rate regardless of when they register.
Chamberlain Scholars are responsible for registering
themselves for the Conference and for making all travel
and lodging arrangements.
Chapters select their Chamberlain Scholar(s) based on
the following criteria, which are established by the
AFP Foundation for Philanthropy:
- Candidate is employed as a fundraising professional or, if candidate is an executive director, a substantial amount of time must be devoted to fundraising.
- Candidate has never attended an AFP (or NSFRE) International Conference on Fundraising as a registered participant (unless as a member of the Conference Host Committee).
- Candidate agrees to complete and return an Evaluation Form about his or her experience to the Scholarship Committee.
- Only one individual from any local organization or institution may be selected.
The application deadline is Thursday, October 18, 2007.
2008 AFPGLAC Executive Officers
During early September, the Nominating Committee met to select a slate of
officers for the upcoming year. General membership Chapter’s Annual
Meeting will approve the proposed slate on December 11.
